These updates mark a substantial change in cleanup protocols, which are expected to have a substantial impact on environmental remediation efforts in the state. A vapor mitigation system is an engineered solution designed to prevent the migration of harmful vapors, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hazardous gases, from subsurface sources (e.g., contaminated soil or groundwater) into buildings or occupied spaces. It typically includes a combination of technologies, such as vapor barriers, venting systems, and sub-slab depressurization, to create a barrier that intercepts and redirects vapors away from structures, ensuring the safety of occupants and preventing indoor air quality issues and health risks associated with exposure to these contaminants. Vapor mitigation systems are commonly employed in environments with known or potential vapor intrusion concerns, such as industrial sites, properties with petroleum contamination present, or areas with historical contamination.
